Minecraft: How to Migrate Your Account – The Nerd Stash

Those used to playing Minecraft: Java Edition may be confused over these significant changes. Now, to play Minecraft, you must migrate your Mojang account into a Microsoft account. If you don’t understand what to do, we’re here to help make everything more straightforward.

How to Migrate Minecraft Mojang Account to Microsoft Account

Since Mojang Studios wishes for a greater connection with their parent company, all Minecraft Mojang accounts must become Microsoft accounts. Mojang accounts are being officially retired, but that’s all that’s changing. This migration leaves your data, profile information, mods, etc., untouched.

It started out as a voluntary option, but this migration isn’t optional as of March 10, 2022. The only way to access Minecraft: Java Edition you must migrate your account.

Thankfully, this is not a difficult process. So, it should take you no time to finish this and jump back into your game. This process is irreversible, though. Because of that, be certain you’re going into the correct Microsoft account.

Now, let’s start migrating by following the steps below:

  1. With your Mojang account, log into minecraft.net. There will be a prompt about “IT”S TIME TO MOVE!”, and you’ll want to select “MOVE MY ACCOUNT”.
  2. From there, Minecraft will want you to verify your email before you can migrate your account. So, select “Get Code” and check your email.
  3. Copy the confirmation code and select “Submit and Start Migration.”
  4. Before you can migrate your account in Minecraft, a new window will show up prompting you to create a Microsoft account. Just follow the instructions from there. You’ll soon be asked to create an Xbox profile and your Gamertag. Although your Minecraft username transfers automatically, your Gamertag and Minecraft username exist independently of each other.
  5. For those that already have a Microsoft account, instead of reaching a prompt to create one, you’ll be asked to log in.
  6. You’ll reach the screen “Let’s Move In!”, and from there, you can finally migrate your Minecraft account.
  7. Just complete the move and you’re done.

You’ll see a confirmation about the move, and once you relaunch the launcher, there’s a chance you’ll see the Mojang login page. If so, simply go back to return to the screen to select login. From there, you can choose “Microsoft Login.”
