Minecraft Frogs: Everything You Need to Know – Beebom

The Minecraft 1.19 update is almost here, and it brings several new mobs and biomes to this game. There are new structures, enchantments, and a lot of other new additions to the game. But one thing that surprisingly stands out the most is the frog mob in this Minecraft update. Starting as a simple mob in front of Allay and Warden in Minecraft, the frogs have steadily gained popularity among the community. That’s because they have variations, new food mechanics, a new breeding system, and some of the coolest animations in the game. But if you haven’t met the frogs yet, you have come to the right place. In this guide, we will be covering everything you need to know about finding, capturing, and breeding all variants of frogs in Minecraft. The frog mob brings a lot to the table, and we are all in for it. So, without further ado, let’s just dive into the world of Minecraft frogs.

Minecraft 1.19 Frogs Mob: Explained (2022)

We have divided the guide into separate sections, covering different aspects of frogs and tadpoles in Minecraft. You can use the table below to explore each of them at your convenience.

Table of Contents

Which Minecraft Update Adds Frogs to the Game?

Mojang will officially add frogs to the game with the Minecraft 1.19 The Wild Update. The developers are currently testing this new mob in Java snapshots and Minecraft Preview (more on this below), alongside the Warden and Allay. And you can test them out right now as well. The Minecraft 1.19 update with frogs is expected to start rolling out to users sometime in April or May. There’s no concrete timeline at the moment, so stay tuned for more information.

Frogs were first introduced in the Minecraft 1.18.10.24 beta for Xbox, Windows, and Android. They are officially coming to all platforms of Minecraft Java and Bedrock with the Minecraft 1.19 Wild Update’s official release.

What Do the Frogs Do in Minecraft?

As the name tells, frogs in Minecraft are a recreation of real-world frogs in the game. But unlike real-life frogs, Minecraft only has three variations of frogs, and each one of them is a cute one. All these in-game frogs can jump up to a height of 3 blocks, which is as tall as our protagonist. Moreover, unlike any non-flying mob, they take little to no fall damage with and even without jumps.

In terms of behavior, they croak and inflate their neck or vocal sacs now and then. According to Mojang, frogs ribbit, hop around, and enjoy sitting on lily pads. If they are not jumping, frogs use all four of their legs in an alternate pattern to walk around. As for their food, Minecraft frogs only eat small slimes and small magma cubes.

Frogs Attack and Eat Slime

In the earlier beta versions of Minecraft 1.19, frogs could eat fireflies and, as a joke, even goats, but that’s no longer the case. Now, the frogs can only attack and eat small slimes and magma cubes using their long tongues. Getting eaten by a frog makes the small slime mobs despawn immediately, but not without a drop.

Froglight

If a frog eats a small slime, it drops slimeballs that can later be fed to the frogs. However, more interestingly, on eating a magma cube, the frogs drop a froglight. It is a light block with the same color as the frog that dropped it. The player can then pick that block up to use it for decorative purposes. There is no recipe in the game that involves froglights yet.

Where to Find Frogs in Minecraft?

The frogs commonly spawn near water sources in Minecraft’s swamp and mangrove swamp biomes in groups of up to five. Beyond the swamps, frogs can also grow in a variety of other biomes, but Mojang has not issued a confirmed list of such biomes just yet. Other than natural spawning, you can also get frogs by growing or breeding them using tadpoles.

Breed Frogs in Minecraft to Get Tadpoles

Similar to how we breed villagers in Minecraft, you can also breed frogs by feeding them their favorite food. So, you simply need to get two frogs close to each other and feed them slimeballs to make them enter their breeding mode. Hearts will pop out from their head, indicating the beginning of the breeding stage.

Frog Breeding in Minecraft

Then, one of the frogs will go near a water source to lay eggs. Minecraft doesn’t follow the concept of the binary sexes of males and females. So, the frog that lays eggs is chosen at random. But every frog lays eggs only in water bodies. There is no minimum or maximum size for waterbodies, but an area of 3 x 3 blocks should be enough.

Frog Eggs or Frog Spawn

The technical name of the eggs that the frog lays is “frog spawn”. These are non-solid blocks that float on top of water source blocks. If a player is in survival mode, there is no way to obtain a frog spawn. They immediately break and despawn if a tool is used on them, even with the silk touch enchantment. Though, touching or jumping on top of the eggs in-game causes no harm.

Spawn or Eggs

Once laid, these eggs or frogs spawn hatch into tadpoles after 5 – 10 minutes. A group of frogs spawn can release up to 6 tadpoles at once. Their animations and survival pattern is similar to fishes in Minecraft. With that said, let’s learn how the tadpoles work in Minecraft to spawn frogs in-game.

Tadpoles

As you already know, tadpoles are the baby version of frogs in real life as well as Minecraft. They have very limited health, and most mobs can kill the tadpoles with a single hit. Fortunately, their only enemy in water bodies is axolotls. And, they can’t survive outside water for more than a few seconds, even with full health.

Tadpoles in Minecraft

Though, unlike eggs, a player can carry and move the tadpoles to another location using a water bucket. As for their growth, the tadpoles generally take less time than the hatching process to grow into frogs. Though, you can feed them slimeballs to make them grow even faster. As for the kind of frog they will turn into comes down to the biome they are growing up in.

Three Frog Variants Found in Minecraft

Minecraft is currently testing three types of frogs, depending on the biome it lives in. And the three variants of frogs include (via Minecraft Wiki):

  • Temperate Frogs
  • Cold Frogs
  • Warm Frogs

Temperate frogs are orange in color and can be found in somewhat neutral temperature biomes like the swamp biome. On the other hand, cold frogs are green in color and only found in lower temperature snowy biomes and the End dimension. Lastly, warm frogs are grey, and you can only find them in hot biomes, including the nether dimension.

Types of Frogs in Minecraft

Depending upon the biome they live in, the tadpoles grow into the frog color of that Minecraft biome‘s temperature. The variant of their parents and the hatching place of frog spawn has no relation to the final color of a new frog.

How to Find Frog Variants in Minecraft

As of March 2022, frogs are exclusive to the Minecraft Bedrock beta versions and the latest Minecraft preview. So, if you don’t want to wait for the official release, meet the frogs by installing the Minecraft 1.19 beta using our linked guide. However, do make sure to create backups of your existing worlds before switching to the beta build.
